One of the classic pictorial propaganda maps of Europe comparing Germany to an octopus strangling the rest of the continent.

Neumont was a well known artist who was commissioned to produce this map at the behest of the “La Conference au Village contre la Propagande ennemie en France.” This conference was established to garner support for the war in provincial and rural France.
The classic image of the octopus here is used to depict a grasping Germany, aided by thuggish caricatures of soldiers from 1715, 1815 and 1914. Various colours of red are used to show historical German aggression against France. Patriotic slogans are placed on various parts of the map, urging resistance against tyranny and fight for freedom.
Neumont’s map has become one of the best known French propaganda maps of the Great War.
Original colour. [EUR1540]
