Three maps describing the topography and infrastructure of Belgium and northern France to illustrate a paper on the role of geography in WWI by the 20th century author Hilaire Belloc. Published in the Journal of the Royal Geographical Society in 1915.
One map decribes the elevation of the Argonne Forest and surrounding areas, one of the fiercest fighting arenas of the war. Another map shows the canals, marshes, and roads of the area surrounding Ostend and Nieuport. The final map provides an overview of the theatre of war with the most important railways used by the Germans marked.
