Karte des Kongobeckens... von Henry M. Stanley
Large and exceedingly detailed map of the Congo River basin showing the discoveries of Henry Morton Stanley. Belgian Congo (Democratic Republic of the Congo) is red, French Congo (Republic of the Congo) is yellow, and Portuguese Angola is green. The map follows the course of the river from its mouth all the way across to the Great Lakes region. Little is known about the interior regions beyond the river banks, and much is left blank. The extent of the Congo Free Trade Area is outlined with a thick red line.
Stanley's own map was first published in his book, Through the Dark Continent in 1878. This German translation, published by Brockhaus in Leipzig, was published shortly after. The map was deemed so important and Stanley's reputation was go enormous that editions were published in many languages, including German, Swedish, and French.
