Map showing the Crimean Peninsula with an inset of Sebastopol on the upper right. The survey was based on the work of Huot and Demidoff. We cannot trace Huot but Demidoff was a fabulously wealthy Russian aristocrat, Count Anatoly Nicolaievich Demidov, First Prince of San Donato, who organised a scientific expedition into southern Russia and the Crimea 1837-38. The results were published in four volumes in 1840-2 and the whole project cost then half a million French Francs. Printed colour. [RUS2562]
