Part of Georgia & Armenia
Sketch map of modern-day Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan showing how the Caucasus were divided between Turkey, Russia, and Persia in 1833.
This map was published in the Journal of the Royal Geographical Society to illustrate Colonel William Monteith's account of his time in the region. Monteith (1790-1864) was a British Army officer and East India Company employee who served with the Persian army during the Russo-Persian wars of the early 19th century. He fought against the Russians several times in support of the Persian Army and was an invaluable source of information for the British government in the region.
Monteith also fought with the British East India Company against Wahhabi pirates in the Persian Gulf and was present at the capture of Algiers by the French in 1830.
