Ducatus Livoniae et Curlandiae
Very nice example of Homann's large map of the Baltic States encompassing modern Latvia, Estonia and parts of Lithuania.

The Baltic States were mapped extensively throughout the 17th century, with maps of the region being produced by Blaeu, Mercator Hondius and Olearius. Homann used these maps as sources but added his own inimitable engraving style as well as one of his trademark cartouches featuring baroque themes on the upper left. It is know known why this area was so heavily featured in 17th and early 18th century atlases although the region was extremely active commercially, particularly in the wheat trade from Poland and the Ukraine.
The example offered here is one of the early issues before Homann gained his "Privilegio" in 1715.
