The Republic of Ragusa was a commercial powerhouse in the region due to its position between the powerful Venetian Republic and the Ottoman Empire. The city, now re-named Dubrovnik, historically acted as a autonomous entity on the Dalmatian coast although it was nominally under Ottoman rule. This special status allowed it to act on behalf of Ottoman merchants in the Adriatic and as well as allowing it access to exclusive areas within the Ottoman Empire such as the Black Sea.

Ragusa (Dubrovnik) also became the major trading port between Florence and the Empire.
