Poloniae

Remarkable map of Poland derived from the Polish cartographer Waclaw Grodziecki.

As was his custom, Ortelius credits his map of Poland to its source, the wall map issued by Waclaw Grodziecki in 1558. 

Ortelius's map has been reduced in size to be accommodated within the atlas (Theatrum Orbis Terrarum) and the title simplified to just "Poloniae" without the additional "Lituaniae" and "Russiae" present on the Grodziecki map. This would change on the second state of the map after 1592, when Lithuania was added to the title. Geographically, the map covers a vast area, from the Oder River in the west to the Dnieper River in the east, thus including much of the Baltic States, part of Germany, then Prussia and a large part of the Ukraine.
