Although this map covers mostly France, it also stretches north into the low countries and east into modern Germany, Italy and Switzerland.
The name "Gallia" or "Gaul" normally refers to classical France in the period of the Greek and the Roman civilizations, but on this map, based on its geographical extent, it is more likely a reference to the Carolingian Empire, founded by Charles Martel in c.718AD and brought to its apogee by his grandson, Charlemagne. Stylistically, this is one of those maps in the Zunner edtion of Sanson's atlas which harks back to an earlier style rather than Sanson's more academic work.
Due to its inclusion in Zunner's German edition of the atlas, Latin is used throughout the map.
