Tabula nova Galliae
Early woodcut map of France from the 1541 edition of Ptolemy's Geographia with maps by Laurent Fries, text by Michael Servetus, and published by Gaspar Treschel. This is one of 24 "modern" maps added by Fries to update the "ancient" maps derived from Claudius Ptolemy. Fries's source is a much rarer and larger map by Martin Waldseemuller published in a 1513 edition of the "Geographia". Though France still appears quite misshapen, this map is a marked improvement over the Ptolemaic map in the atlas. Rivers, mountains, and major towns are the only features included on the map.
