Zelandicarum Insularum Exactissima et Nova Descriptio

Stunning example of Ortelius's map of the Dutch province of Zeeland and surrounding province North Brabant and South Holland, and with part of northern Belgium. The cities of Middelburg [Middelburch], Bergan op Zoom, Rotterdam, and Antwerp are marked on the map.


The map is based upon the 1547 map by Dutch cartographer Jacobus van Deventer (c.1500-1575), who systematically mapped all the cities in the Netherlands by order of King Philip II.


It is embellished with ornate strapwork cartouche, three ships and vision of Neptune riding a sea monster whilst holding his Triton and a coat of arms for the Province of Zeelandia.
