Large pictorial map of the world on Mercator's Projection highlighting the network of air routes established by Air France.
This is one of a series of promotional maps in the style of the Dutch Golden Age of the 17th century with multiple vignettes and illustrations. The title translates as "new routes on the ancient earth" and was likely commissioned to promote two key new routes established by Air France. One was a flight from Paris to Santiago in Chile, a mammoth undertaking, with multiple stops along the route, only recently re-established in 1961 with the introduction of commercial jets; the other was possibly more important, advertising the introduction of a direct flight between Paris and New York. This was first introduced in 1963 and on the map it is shown as a dotted line, suggesting that it had not been introduced quite yet but it had been announced.
The map is drawn in Boucher's highly distinctive style which had been so effective for Air France throughout its existence and a note on the lower left states that this print run is limited to 150 examples.
Printed colour. Backed on archival linen. [WLD4795]
