A charming pictorial map showing the route of Queen Elizabeth II's famous Commonwealth Tour, celebrating her coronation in 1953. The tour lasted 6 months and covered over 44,000 miles. The tour started in Bermuda, Jamaica, and the Caribbean, before crossing the Pacific Ocean to Fiji, Tonga, New Zealand, and Australia. The party then travelled by ship to Sri Lanka and Aden, before visiting Uganda and Tobruk in Africa. The final leg of the tour would be aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia, calling at Malta and Gibraltar.
This colourful map was designed by Raymond Tooby, a poster artist better known for his iconic Guinness advertisements. Delightful illustrations of fish, wildlife, and local inhabitants dot the map, their vibrancy lending a celebratory air to the piece, which was issued as an illustrated supplement to a news magazine. The back of the map features photographs of the Queen and the Prince of Wales along with further details of the upcoming tour.
