A delightful vintage Quad Royal map of Devon, published by British Railways to promote tourist travel. Designed by poster artist William Bowyer and first published c.1948 as one of a series of posters to lure tourists to the southwest of England.
The map is richly decorated with caricatures of historical and mythical figures illustrating the history and attractions of Devon. These include Sir Walter Raleigh at his birthplace of East Budleigh, Napoleon near Torquay where he departed for Elba, and Alfred the Great defeating Hubba the Dane near Bideford. The county is described in the map's title as "famous for its cream and cider and its varies natural scenery and lovely Resorts". The coats of arms of Torquay, Plymouth, Tavistock, and Dartmouth are included to the left of the map.
Printed colour.
