Rare pictorial map focusing on Iraq, Lebanon, Jordan and Syria, with an emphasis on the oil industry in the mid 20th century.
Although borders are present, the main emphasis of the map are the Rivers Tigris and Euphrates. Vignettes of ancient monuments mark famous cities of antiquity; these are interspersed with modern vignettes of oil drills and refineries. A majestic pipeline originates in Kirkuk and is shown distributing oil to Banias, Haifa and Tripoli on the Levant coast. The map also bears illustrated borders on the subject of oil and its uses.
The artist, Victor Coverley-Price, whose name is shown on the lower right, was a diplomat, mountaineer and great traveller. Although also a commercial artist as shown by this piece, he was widely exhibited throughout the world, particularly for his mountaineering paintings.
A highly unusual piece. Printed colour. [MEAST4419]
