Saigon
Separately issued vintage pictorial plan of Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon.
This charming map was published by Havas Extreme Orient, an advertising company closely associated with the French colonies of the Far East. The map is stylised to highlight important buildings and features of the city as opposed to provide purely geographical information and ribbon titles show the location of picturesque areas such as the public Zoo, the Botanical Gardens and the Old Market. The lower right corner of the map bears the name of the cartographer who originally drew the map, Tran-Van-Bot. Very much in keeping with its style and function, the map is surrounded by adverts of local businesses.
Unlike many of these pieces of ephemera, this was not a map that was given away free but rather it had to be purchased. The price is on the lower right corner of the image, " Prix Cinq Piastres". This currency ceased to be in circulation after 1952.
