Laurie and Whittle’s view of the famous “crossing of the T” at Trafalgar is one of the classic images of the battle. It was issued in two versions, probably with different original prices; one had a sheet of explanatory text below the image and one did not. The image is carefully labelled with the names of the British Fleet, therefore making it easily comprehensible without the text. As is usual, this is more of an artist’s idealised perception of the first stages of the Battle; this image is also famous for the large vignette of Nelson’s last moments present on the lower centre. Our example lacks the text.
As with all broadsheets, this view is rare; although produced in large numbers, their ephemeral nature makes their survival to the modern day very unlikely. This example is in particularly good condition in exceptional original colour.
