Road Railway and Telegraphic Map of India Shewing the Post Roads and Dawk Stations

Rare map of the sub-continent focusing on the infrastructure of the region, showing the latest development of road, rail and telegraph.


This is a late and therefore one of the most developed of the editions of this map, the first issued in 1855 and a second version issued again in 1864. The list of provinces and states on the lower left has now changed, with the disappearance of Rajpootana, the Nizam's Dominions, Mysore and Native States, all of which are present on the 1864 edition. There are also political changes with the absorption of several native states as indicated on the listing mentioned above. The railway network has been advanced, particularly with the sanctioning of additional railway spurs.


The curiously named Dawk Stations in the title are stations which served a purpose of acting both as post offices and establishments which were travellers could hire bearers both to ship goods and luggage or even themselves in a palanquin.
