Admiralty chart of the island of Pulau Bukom (or Bukum) located just south of Singapore. This island was first used to store kerosene in 1892 as the liquid was deemed to unsafe to store within the city itself. In 1897, the island became the home of the Shell Transport and Trading Company, which would merge with the Royal Dutch Petroleum Company in 1907 to form Royal Dutch Shell. Pulau Bukom was also the site of Singapore's first oil refinery, established in 1960-61 when this map was published. This map was likely updated by the Admiralty around this time to reflect the growing tanker traffic sailing to and from Pulau Bukum.
