Stunning map of the Americas with decorative carte à figure borders depicting some of the continent's cities and inhabitants. In the upper margin are bird's-eye views of Havana, Santo Domingo, Cartagena, Mexico City, Cusco, Mocha (Chile), Rio de Janeiro, and Olinda.
This is the first atlas map to show California as an island. John Speed's credibility and his use of Dutch engravers are two of the main reasons why the myth caught on and was adopted by other distinguished mapmakers, particularly by the Hondius and Blaeu families.
The English colonies of Jamestown [Iames Citti] and Plymouth are both marked, and other English place names have been added in this 1676 edition, including Boston, Marthas Vineyard, and Long Island.
Engraved by Abraham Goos in Amsterdam and published by Thomas Bassett and Richard Chiswell in London. English text on verso. Image available on request.
