Caerte vande Zee Custen van Acason en Biscaie
This wonderful map in fantastic original colour is from the first great sea chart atlas, Waghenaer's Spieghel der zeevaerdt ('Mariner's mirror'). It depicts the coasts of northern Spain and southwest France on the Bay of Biscay and is oriented with south at the top of the page. It extends from Arcachon to Laredo, and includes the cities of Bayonne, San Sebastian, and Bilbao. The map is splendidly decorated with a large, strapwork title cartouche, a central compass rose, two beautiful galleons, and even sea monsters.
Original hand-colour. [SP1915]
