Mare del Sud
Large sea chart of the Pacific Ocean extending from Japan to the west coasts of North & South America. Of particular interest are the crude outlines of Australia and New Zealand based on the discoveries of Abel Tasman. Curiously, the small section of New Zealand discovered by Tasman is shown here connected to the Terra Australis Incognita, the undiscovered southern continent. The map also shows California as an island.
The map is embellished with rhumb lines and a grand title cartouche which features a giant clam filled with the riches of the sea and held open by winged mermen.
