Amerique Septentrionale
Scarce Mortier edition of Alexis-Hubert Jaillot's map of North America showing California as an island with geographical information primarily taken from Sanson. The Mississippi River is not labeled, and openings on the western sides of Buttons Bay, Lake Huron, and Lake Superior present the possibility of a Northwest Passage. The ornate cartouche surrounds a dedication to "Monseigneur le Dauphin", the heir to the French throne. Original hand-colour. (SL) [AMER1229]
