The first geological map of the Black Hills of South Dakota. Prepared by Newton Horace Winchell during the Custer Expedition of 1874. Winchell was a founding member of the Geological Society of America. This map covers the whole of the Black Hills National Forest. The routes of several army reconnaissance expeditions are marked on the map, while many short notes describe the region's terrain. The dashed black line marks the border between Wyoming and South Dakota. This map was published to accompany a report by Captain William Ludlow, Chief Surveyor of the Dakota Territory. Printed colour. (SL) [USA7291]
