A map of Cork showing the city in the year 1750. It features a decorative title cartouche with an allegorical figure likely representing the River Lee. There is also an index of 18 city landmarks, including the poor house, the Free School, an infirmary, and several churches. The map is oriented with north to the left.
This map was originally published in 1750 by the Irish topographer and historian Charles Smith. In the 1730s Smith embarked on an ambitious project to write histories for each of the Irish counties, starting with County Down. Only 4 counties were ever completed (Down, Waterford, Cork, and Kerry). The history of County Cork contained both a map of the county and a map of the city. Our example is from an 1815 re-issue by John Connor, a Cork publisher and printer.
