Early panoramic map of Basle, Switzerland. Present in the Civitates Orbis Terrarum, the first atlas dedicated to cities.
This plan first appeared in volume two of the Civitates Orbis Terrarum. It is not to be confused with the image of Basle appearing in volume one of the work which shows it as one of thirteen images on a single sheet illustrating the Swiss Cantons.
This image is based on a map initially issued by Sebastian Munster in 1544.
This example bears German text on the reverse. According to the carto bibliography, there were three German editions of this work. In 1575, 1582 and 1617. Judging by the crack in the copper plate present in the river near the bridge, this was a very late pull of the copper plate, probably from the last 1618 edition.
