Vintage English-language tourist map of the department of Provence in southern France. The map extends to show Vals in the north, Avignon and Nimes in the west, Gap, Dignes and Grasse in the east and in the south, the popular coastal destinations of Marseilles, Toulon, St. Tropez and Cannes.
Across this graphic map, there are icons to denote the location of landmarks of historical interest, ancient dwellings, castles, ruins, grottoes, and pilgrimage sites, as well as airfields, spas, and seaside resorts. A key to these icons sits in the lower left corner of the map. Major roads and rivers are marked.
The map would have originally been presented as a folding pamphlet and created by “Sofcar” for the Ministère des Travaux Publics, des Transports et du Tourisme, Comissariat Generale au Tourisme [Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Tourism, General Tourism Commission].
On the reverse of the map, there is a short history of Provence and the surrounding country, accompanied by artistic impressions of the countryside by Van Gogh and an excerpt of a letter from Van Gogh to Emile Bernard in 1888.
Printed colour. Image of verso available on request.
