James Wyld the Elder's edition of Faden's fine map of London from the Isle of Dogs in the east to Sloane Street in the west and Camberwell in the south to Islington in the north.
William Faden originally published this map in 1818 as an index to his re-issue of Richard Horwood’s enormous plan of London in forty sheets. Hence the reference to this in the title. Although Faden first issued Horwood’s work in 1813, there was a new edition in 1819 and this map was possibly used to sell or market the work.
The key map must also have been popular as it went through many more editions than Horwood’s work, not only in Faden’s lifetime but also in its editions under two generations of the Wyld firm, Faden’s successors. One can see its attraction. It is large, clear, colourful and highly accurate. The city is divided into its various Liberties and Boroughs, the parks are a bright clear green and of particular not is the extraordinary network of canals beginning to circle the city and connecting to the newly built docks in the eastern part.
This is a particularly fine example, issued by John Wyld the Younger in 1824, the year after William Faden’s retirement.
