Grundriß der Statt London wie solche vor und nach dem Brand anzusehen sampt
A famous map of London after the Great Fire of 1666 with the burnt area shown in white. There is an inset below the map showing Hooke's proposal for the reconstruction of the city on a grid system. Many prominent landmark buildings are illustrated in profile, adding a charming level of detail to the map. A royal coat of arms and the arms of the City of London are displayed in the upper corners.
Though unatrributed and listed in reference works as by an 'anonymous' author, this map originally appeared in a work by Matthaus Merian's heirs in 1677 - it is therefore generally known as Merian's map of the Great Fire for simplicity's sake.
