Le Royaume de Sardaigne

Stunningly engraved mid-18thcentury map of Sardinia,
in the Mediterranean Sea.

This large and finely-engraved map of the Italian island prominently
marks major towns, such as Cagliari, Alghero, and Sassari - with fortifications
and a cross, each coloured red. Illustrated across the map, and nestled amongst
the mountainous topography and road network are small local landmarks and
points of historical interest, such as monasteries. In a key in the lower left
of the map indicates the produce that can be found in the local mines, such a
gold, silver and copper. Administrative
divisions have been highlighted using dotted lines and the use of colour.

A small sword can be seen seen south of
Oristano near Uras, and is dated 1470 – this is the site of the first battle during
an important revolt led by Leonardo Alagon, Marquess of Oristano, in an attempt
to gain independence from the Aragonese (Spanish Empire) who had control of the
island since 1323.
