Isola Regno di Candia
Large wall map of Crete on two sheets joined published just after the end of the Cretan War between Venice and the Ottoman Empire.
No doubt the major reason for this fine rendering of Crete by Coronelli was as a reminder that the island was Venetian until 1669. In fact the Republic was engaged with a war with the same opponents in Morea, on mainland Greece when this map was published. The panels surrounding the map in a decoration resembling foliage contain one hundred ancient names of settlements on the island as a reminder of its importance since the Classical period.
