Terra Firma et Nova Granada
This vast region now encompasses modern Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Guiana and Surinam together with part of Brazil.
It is one of the earliest available regional maps of this part of South America and is based on Sanson's own large map which bears an engraving date of 1656 but was actually issued in his atlas of 1658. Sanson's own information would have been based on Jesuit sources.
This example is the 1679 German edition of the atlas issued by Johann Zunner and is distinguished by its use of the Spanish language as opposed to the usual French.
