De Heylige en Wytvermaerde Stadt Jerusalem Eerst Genaemt Salem
A bird's-eye view of the holy city of Jerusalem according to Biblical descriptions. The lower corners depict the Crucifixion of Jesus and the Anointing of Solomon. Important landmarks are illustrated and numbered according to an index to the left of the map. The city's streets, buildings, and water conduits are all carefully laid out following descriptions of the city throughout the Bible. This map was published for inclusion in Dutch Bibles and was therefore to be used as a reference for readers to understand the named places and events in context. Visscher derived this view from an earlier 1630 map by Johann and Heinrich Stern but made significant improvements to the quality of the engraving.
