North America | Amerique Septentrionale
Miniature atlas map of the North America showing the situation on the continent during the Seven Years' War (1756-1763).
The Pacific Northwest coastline remains unfinished but lacks the speculative "Sea of the West", and California has been labelled "New Albion" - a name given to the land following the landfall of Sir Francis Drake in 1579.
The map shows the established borders between the English Colonies and Louisiana and is prior to the handover of four formerly French islands in the West Indies to the British (coloured pink on the map), as laid out in the Treaty at the end of the Seven Years' War.
The quest for the Northwest Passage was still in full flow. There are rivers on the western coast of Hudson's Bay, but none to lead across the continent at this point.
Original outline colour. [AMER2357]
