Extraordinarily detailed folding wall map of the theatre of the Mesopotamian Campaign of the Great War. In modern terms, the map shows parts of Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. It is centered on the northern part of the Gulf. As befits a military map, the detail is quite extraordinary, including telegraph lines, international and regional borders, the famous Berlin to Baghdad Railway together with its link to Basra and routes of famous explorers such as St. John Philby and Wilfrid and Anne Blunt.
The lower border contains a detailed key to all the symbols on the map as well as a note that it was compiled at the Royal Geographical Society under the instructions of the Geographical Section General Staff and ultimately published at the War Office. There is even a brief lexicon of Arabic to help identify geographical features. This version of the map was the commercial edition as there is a list of agents approved to sell it to the general public. Finally, there is a label attached, which suggests that Edward Stanford of London was the main approved agent. Printed colour. Folded. [MEAST4295]
