Detailed map showing a journey from Kathmandu, Nepal to Lhasa, Tibet and then along the Brahmaputra River by an unnamed "Pundit" (secret agents of the Survey of India).


The unnamed pundit's mission was to establish the positions of the Indus and Sutlej Rivers, explore the famed goldfields of Thok Jalong, and fill in a number of topographical gaps.


This journey taken in 1865-67, traces the pundit from Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal north to the border with China and the Trishuli River. From here, he would travel northwest into Tibet, past Lake Manas Sarovar (Manasarwor), the source of the River Indus, on to Gartok (Gartokh), and then east all the way to Lhasa, Tibet (now known as Chengguan).



The map was compiled by Major Thomas George Montgomerie. Mt. Everest is marked on the map as a lone peak surrounded by unmapped country.
