Nuova et esatta Carta della America

Unusual and beautifully engraved map of the western hemisphere present in the Gazettiere Americano, an Italian translation of the American Gazetteer. This map is based on an amalgam of sources, with the general shape of South America taken from de L'Isle's map but with several geographical notes particularly on the South Pacific. One of these refers to "Cap. Sharp". This was the notorious pirate, Bartholomew Sharp who captured a book of Spanish charts of the South Pacific which were deemed so valuable to the English Crown that he was pardoned of his piracy.

The map of North America is partly based on Bellin, especially in the west and Canada. [AMER2397]
