Rare late edition of de L'Isle's map of the Americas with substantial alterations.

Originally published in 1722, this map was highly influential and was used by multiple map makers throughout the 18th century, often without de L'Isle's permission. It continued to be re-issued under de L'Isle's name by his successor, Buache and again by Buache's successor, Jean-Claude Dezauche. This version of the map, published by the latter, is nearly eighty years old, and more of a cartographic curiosity than a scientific document, mostly due to Dezauche's attempts to use de L'Isle's now antiquated geography and integrate new discoveries and domestic and geo-political developments within it. Of particular prominence is the addition of the "Etats Unis" or United States on the east coast of North America, the addition of the detail both on the west coast and the Pacific Northwest Coast. Specifically, an inset has been added on the upper left, showing Cook's discoveries in the same region during his third voyage in 1776-9. On the domestic front, Dezauche has thoroughly amended the cartouche, removing any royalist insignia lest he fall foul of the new Revolutionary government of France. He also adds the new Revolutionary calendar date of "Garantie Nantionale An 9" as well as having a Roman calendar date of 1800. These two dates do not tally as the Revolutionary calendar was introduced in 1792, suggesting that this map was originally published in 1800 but this is a new edition published a year later, with only the Garantie Nationale Year amended.
