A beautiful Dutch Golden Age map of Wiltshire embellished with the armorial shields of local nobleman, a royal coat of arms, and two decorative cartouches. A note below the coat of arms of St George on the right notes that three historical figures related to the legend of King Arthur were believed to have been buried at Stonehenge: Ambrosius Aurelianus (Arthur's uncle), Uther Pendragon (Arthur's father), and Constans II (Arthur's uncle).
The county is divided into its hundreds. a historic subdivision derived from the amount of arable land required to feed 100 fighting men and their families. Prominent cities and towns are marked in red, as is the monument of Stonehenge.
Latin text on the verso (image available upon request). Original hand-colour. [WILTS385]
