Extremely detailed chart of the port of Plymouth, its docks, roads (both land and marine), waterways, and Sound.
Peculiarly, this chart appeared in the "Oriental Pilot or East India Navigator" most likely since Plymouth was one of the principal departure and arrival ports for British East India ships sailing to and from the Far East.
Although no credit is present on the map, its source is most likely to have been a local pilot or pilots. The sailing instructions are meticulous, the depths are meticulously recorded and there are four panels of text narrating the best methods of negotiating the tricky Roads and approaches to the port, particularly as British East India ships were noted for their large size.
The date of the survey is given as 1797 with the publishing date noted as 1798.
