Geological Map of Yezo
Geological map of Hokkaido. Volcanoes are marked with red dots. From information compiled by J. Milne, professor of mining and geology at the Imperial University of Tokyo.
John Milne was one of a number of foreign experts hired by the Meiji goverment to teach at the Imperial University of Tokyo. Over the course of his 19 years in Japan, Milne helped to establish the Seismological Survey of Japan (SSJ) and invented the horizontal pendulum seismograph which allowed him to detect much finer earthquakes and seismic waves.
For his efforts, Milne was awarded the prestigious Third Grade of the Order of the Rising Sun by the emperor himself, along with a lifetime pension.
Milne returned to England in 1895 after a fire destroyed his house and workshop. Later he dedicated himself to establishing a network of 20 earthquake research centres across the globe, all of which used his seismograph.
