Colourful map of Texas shortly after joining the United States in 1846. An inset shows the lands to the northwest claimed by Texas while an independent Republic. Two old manuscript notations mark the southern boundary of New Mexico according to her state Constitution and the boundary of New Mexico according to Alexander von Humboldt.
The first edition of this map was published by C.S. Williams in 1845, shortly before the annexation of Texas. Samuel Mitchell acquired the map in 1846 and continued to publish it, largely unchanged, until 1849 when he sold the rights to Thomas Cowperthwait & Co. This example was published in an 1849 atlas by Samuel Mitchell.
