August Pfizmaier, Shanghai, 1880 c

Late 19th century issue of a map of the Chinese city of Shanghai as it was in the mid 16th century.

This keyed map of ancient Shanghai as it was under the Ming Dynasty was first issued in a work about the city by the missionary Walter Medhurst in 1850. It celebrates the history of the city. The map illustrates the settlement c.1550 as a walled city with several major gates. During this period, it began to emerge as a major trading hub on the Yangtze River.

The map was then issued again and this time translated into German by the eminent Austrian translator, August Pfizmaier. Original colour. [SEAS5448]
