Famous map shows modern Tennessee and western North Carolina. According to the engraver, Thomas Kitchin, sources for the map included a diagram provided by Native Americans, and from John Mitchell's monumental 1755 wall map of the United States.
It's inclusion in the London Magazine was due to the concern that the French and their native American allies could invade British Territory in the United States from the West. As this map was printed during the the Seven Year's War, known as the French-Indian War in the United States, this was a very real concern.
Colonel George Pawley (unknown) "was the agent who made the important land purchase from the Cherokee at Ninety Six on the Cherokee Trail from Charleston to Keowee" (The Cherokee Path primary route from Charleston to Columbia, South Carolina in Colonial America, connecting all of the Cherokee territories -the path was mapped in 1730 by George Hunter, the Surveyor-General of South Carolina).
