Sketch map showing the British army's movements and positions during the Battle of Brooklyn, part of the British capture of New York City during the Revolutionary War. The map covers much of modern-day Brooklyn, from Gravesend in the south to Williamsburg in the north. Flatbush, New Utrecht, Gravesend, Bedford, and Brookland are marked as small, independent villages. The southern tip of Manhattan is visible across the river.
Also marked on the map are the American fortifications in the Brooklyn Heights from which General George Washington managed to evacuate his army across the East River to safety without loss of life or supplies. Even though the battle was a victory for the British and New York did eventually fall, Washington's lucky escape from Brooklyn allowed the Continental Army to fight another day.
This map was published for "Stedman's History of the American War", an important record of the major battles of the American Revolution. [USA9769]
