A map of western Georgia encompassing modern Mississippi, Alabama. This map serves to map the supposed lands of the Mississippi, Upper Mississippi, Tennessee and Georgia Land Companies.
These spurious entities were part of the infamous Yazoo Land Fraud or Scandal, in which local politicians sold large tracts of land to private investors or supporters at very favourable prices, many of whom then flipped the parcels to other parties, several of them outside the United States. The fraud ultimately led to a long, complicated court case which eventually reached the United States Supreme Court who finally ruled in favour of the original investors against the wishes of the Federal Government.
