Watson's rare, separately-issued folding map of the Western United States published in the same year that the first Trans-Continental Railroad was completed. Two additional proposed northern and southern routes are detailed on the map. The Star Spangled Banner and the Great Seal of the United States adorn the top of the map, while two vignettes of sailing ships are included in the Pacific and the Gulf of Mexico. Overall, the state boundaries are almost all consistent with modern borders, though Dakota has yet to be divided into North and South, and many of the western states are still only territories at this point in time.
