A Correct Map of the United States of North America
A very early map defining the newly formed United States, before the addition of Kentucky, Tennessee and Vermont into the Federation.
The map was issued in Bankes's " New System of Universal Geography" and shows the Mississippi as the western border of the U.S. with the vast French territory of Louisiana is shown beyond, although due to a quirk of history, it was technically under Spanish rule at this time. A large part of the southeast still belongs to Spain and is called Eastern and Western Florida while the northeast border with Great Britain is still not determined. A fascinating record of the United States at the very beginning of its existence. Coloured. [USA9114]
