A map of New Zealand published within a decade of the declaration of the islands as a distinct and independent colony of Great Britain, separate from the Colony of New South Wales in Australia. Much of the interior remains entirely unknown to Europeans, though the coastal regions are generally accurate. A note below the title explains that the southern part of the North Island has been corrected based on surveys undertaken by Mr Kettle, Assistant Surveyor to the New Zealand Company, in October 1843.
W. & A.K. Johnston's National Atlas, in which this map was printed, was first published in 1843, though the additions of Canterbury Province and Dunedin suggest a later date of c.1850 for this example. Two small insets show the environs of Wellington and Lyttleton (known at the time as Port Cooper).
Original hand-colour. [AUNZ2885]
