A New Map of Jamaica
Splendid example of the atlas version of Bowles's map of Jamaica. Inset of Port Royal on the lower left.
This map is a reduction of the large, two sheet map of the island issued in Patrick Browne's "A Civil and Natural History of Jamaica". Browne was a physician who settled on the island but he had a major interest in natural history, particularly botany. He was a regular correspondent with Carl Linnaeus.
The map was originally printed on two sheets and issued by John Bowles, father to Carington, in 1755. The geographical credit on the map is given to "Mr. Sheffield and others" about whom little is known. The survey was apparently made between 1730-49. It is cited as being the first large scale published survey of Jamaica.
Original hand colour. [WIND4203]
